About Scenery
Scenery is a spatial audio streaming app built around a simple idea: that a recording of a real place, made carefully enough, is more interesting to listen to for an hour than anything generated.
It is available on iPhone, iPad, Android, and in a web browser.
Why Tainan
Tainan is where this started — not as a strategy, but because it is where we live and it is what was within reach.
That constraint turned out to be the useful part. Rather than sampling a hundred places shallowly, the collection covers three of them properly: the railway station, from six positions; the coastline, from nine; a school sports ground, from four. A station concourse recorded once is a sound effect. A station concourse recorded from the main hall, the ticket gate, the underpass and the plaza outside is a portrait of a building.
How the recordings are made
Each recording is captured on location and produced in two versions: a binaural stereo mix for headphones, and a Dolby Atmos mix for devices and speaker systems that can render it.
Nothing is looped, layered from a library, or generated. What you hear is what was there, for the five to seven minutes the recorder was running — including the parts that a sound designer would have removed.
Dolby, Dolby Atmos, and the double-D symbol are registered trademarks of Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation.
Who makes it
Scenery is made by W.G. Studio.
- Nicolas Chen — recording and mixing engineer
- Kevin Yang — software engineer
Where Scenery is going
Right now the collection is 19 recordings, all made in Tainan and all published together.
We would rather grow it slowly and say what it is than pad the number. More places are being recorded. When they are ready, they will appear here.
